Biography
MICHAEL REID has been the Americas Editor of The Economist since May 1999. Previously he was The Economist’s South America Bureau Chief, based in São Paulo (1996-99), and Mexico and Central America correspondent (1990-93). He was formerly a writer and journalist on the Andean countries, based in Lima, Peru (1982-90).
He writes a monthly column on Latin American affairs in Poder magazine (Mexico); between 2000-04 he wrote a weekly column in Valor Econômico, Brazil’s financial daily newspaper. He has been awarded Brazil’s Order of the Southern Cross for his writing on Brazil and Mercosur, and the Maria Moors Cabot prize of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism for distinguished reporting on Latin America.
